An architecture company have showcased a Waterford project they completed in 2024 as they close until January. project they completed in 2024 as they close until January.

Paul McMahon Design & McMahon McBennett shared images of the house they worked on for "amazing clients in Co. Waterford."

They said: "The ruins of this old crumbling cottage set in such an idyllic location is a symbol of a perfect existence in times past. As we sat down to design this home, our first thought was questioning how anyone could leave such a lovely place.

"These cottages literally grew out of the landscape that surrounded them and that’s what we wanted to emulate with this design. We wanted to create a home that tells its own story. We have designed a ‘new build’ dwelling which emulates the style of an old cottage.

"Our newly designed cottage integrates itself sympathetically into the old ruinous walls on site. With light filled rooms and spaces, we have created a perfect connection and harmony between interior and exterior spaces. Every turn reveals a new view through the house which inevitably leads you back to a breath-taking connection with the old ruinous walls which now form a protected and private external living space.

"The old ruinous walls provide structural support to a canopy over part of the patio area allowing this external space to be utilised all year round.

"As we sit under the canopy, surrounded by the ruins of the old cottage, we can listen to the birdsong, listen to the breeze in the overgrown trees, enjoy the cottage garden & the leafy laneway and embrace the happiness and contentment that is inspired by the old Irish vernacular."
