Woman killed, man 'critical' and two others hospitalised after horror early morning crash

A woman has died, and a man has been left in a critical condition following a serious road crash in the early hours of Monday morning.

Gardaí said the fatal single-vehicle collision involving a car happened on the N15 at Grellagh, Castlegal, Co Sligo at approximately 3.30am.

Gardaí and emergency services rushed to the scene after the alarm was raised.

In a statement, a Garda spokesperson said: "A female passenger, aged in her 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene."

Her body has since been removed to the mortuary at Sligo University Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

Another passenger, a man aged in his 50s, was taken to hospital where his condition has been described as "critical".

"The driver (male, 20s) and the third passenger in the car (a male juvenile teenager) are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at SUH," the Garda spokesperson added.

The N15 was closed for a time while Garda Forensic Collision Investigators carried out a technical examination of the scene, but it has since reopened to traffic.

Gardaí have now launched an appeal for witnesses who may have been in the area at the time of the crash.

Investigators are seeking anyone who may have been travelling on the N15 at Castlegal - between Cliffoney and Tullaghan - between 3.10am and 3.40am on Monday.

Road users with camera footage, including dash-cam recordings, are asked to make it available to gardaí.
