Three dead and others seriously injured on Irish roads in 12 hours amid Garda appeals

Three people have died and others have been injured in separate collisions on Irish roads in the past 12 hours, as Gardaí continue to appeal for information on both. 

One crash happened this morning at Castleblaney, Co. Monaghan at about 8 o'clock this morning. 

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of the collision which involved a HGV and a car.

It happened on the N2 at Mullaghnee, Annalitten, Castleblayney.

The driver of the car, a female in her 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her body was removed to the mortuary at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, where a post-mortem examination will take place.

No other injuries reported at this time and a man aged in his 50s has been arrested.

He is currently detained at a station in the Garda North Western Region.

The road is currently closed and local diversions are in place.

Another crash happened in Limerick overnight. 

One young man, aged in his 20s, has died and three teenagers are in hospital with serious injuries.

Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to a two-car collision on the N21 at Ballymurragh West, Templeglantine at approximately 12.50am.

A garda spokesperson said one of the drivers, a male aged in his 20s, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

"His body was removed to the mortuary at University Hospital Limerick where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

"Three teenagers - two female juveniles and an adult male - were brought to University Hospital Limerick and University Hospital Kerry for treatment of serious injuries. A male in his 20s was also brought to University Hospital Kerry with non-life-threatening injuries," said a garda spokesperson.

The road is currently closed pending a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local diversions are in place.

A separate crash has happened in Tipperary, which saw a man in his 20s killed. 

It happened on the N24 between Tipperary Town and Bansha.

In a statement on this morning, Gardaí said they and emergency services were alerted to the single-car collision on the N24 at Cordangan Cross at approximately 9:45 pm last night.

The driver – and sole occupant of the car – was pronounced dead at the scene.

The N24 remains closed pending an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

The man's body was removed to Waterford University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place.

"Any road users, who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area around Tipperary Town and the Bansha Road between 9pm and 10pm are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí," a statement said.

"In particular, Gardaí are interested in potential sightings of a 2005-registered grey Toyota Yaris during this period," it added.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed either collision to contact them.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Castleblayney Garda Station on 047 77200, Tipperary Garda Station on 062 80670, Newcastle West garda station on 069 206 50, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

Separately again, a woman in her 50s has been arrested in relation to a fatal crash that happened in Dunleer, Co. Louth on Sunday, 14th July, 2024.

She is due to appear before Dundalk District Court this morning.

Investigations are ongoing.
