'You hear terrifying stories'- Young woman alarmed over 'creepy' delivery driver text
A young woman has been left feeling incredibly uneasy after a delivery driver used her personal phone number to contact her and ask her out on a date.
The woman named Hannah was recently on RTE's Liveline to discuss the issue with host Kieran Cuddihy.
"I got in touch because I was with a group of friends this weekend and we were all sharing somewhat similar stories and the general consensus was that topics like this need a little bit more air time because women don't often make a complaint," Hannah told Kieran on Liveline.
Hannah recently moved into a different neighbourhood and was receiving a number of deliveries to her house which made her become quite familiar with the various delivery drivers who would come to her door.
She said that she would strike up friendly conversation with them but one particular delivery driver at one point tried to give Hannah his number and said "feel free to message me on it" if she wasn't home at the time of delivery or if she needed to rearrange a delivery slot.
"I didn't feel the need to message him...most of these companies would have that within the app...the option to reschedule a delivery...so I didn't message him," Hannah said.
Hannah said however that the delivery driver messaged her on her personal phone number via Whatsapp and one day messaged her to ask if she would be home because he has a delivery for her that day.

Hannah thought this was a bit strange and "not really necessary" but wasn't worried at that point in time.
A few weeks later the man messaged Hannah with a picture asking her out for coffee.
Hannah spoke with her sister about the message she had received from her delivery driver and both of them debated on how to take the situation.
"We said like is this weird? Is it creepy? We honestly didn't know how to take it...we ultimately decided to just respond with 'no, I am married with two children' and this had kind of come up in conversation".
Hannah said that the man sent back another photo message that said 'ok if you don't ask you don't know' and since this incident Hannah has tried her best to avoid him bringing any more deliveries to her home. She said she ordered from different companies or just put down that she wasn't home to leave the package at her door to avoid the delivery man.
"I didn't like that he had taken my personal number and messaged me...I felt somewhat uneasy about the whole thing."
Hannah said that this incident is one example of how and why women need to change their behaviours in order to feel safe in day-to-day life.
Hannah said that she has heard of other women being contacted by taxi drivers after using their services and said that generally a lot of women who get in the back of taxis will message someone with their details to let them know where they are at all times.
"If we are walking anywhere in the dark, we'd keep our keys in our hand...and I certainly don't go running in the dark anymore after 5pm...there are a lot of behaviours that women change in day-to-day life to feel safe.
"You hear terrifying stories of women being attacked in broad daylight like when going out for a run...and yeah you do everything you can stay as safe as you possibly can," Hannah told Kieran.
She said that there isn't an easy fix or overnight solution to these issues, but one thing she said that men can do to make women feel more safe is respect their distance. If they see a woman out walking by herself, don't run up behind her; leave a respectable distance so she doesn't feel threatened.
