Gardai say Premier League fan was travelling at 120km/h when stopped by gardai in Limerick

A soccer fan who was caught watching a mid-table Premier League match on his phone while driving at high speed is facing prosecution before the courts, gardai have confirmed.

Highlighting the detection on social media, gardai say the football-loving motorist was watching a live-stream of this Sunday's Super Sunday clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United when they encountered the car.

"Limerick Roads Policing apprehended this vehicle earlier today, travelling at 120km/h whilst the driver was simultaneously watching the Spurs v Man Utd game on their phone," read the post.

"Needless to say, a court appearance will follow for this football enthusiast," added gardai.

No further details of this Sunday's incident have been disclosed publicly and it may be some time before the final result of criminal proceedings is known.

Commenting on the social media post, which has been viewed thousands of times, one Facebook user said: "A massive own goal by the driver. Glad he was caught," while another wrote: "Got more points than Utd did today."

For the record, the final result on the field at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was Spurs 1 - Manchester United 0.
