Disqualified driver 'tried to evade gardai' after performing dangerous manoeuvres

Gardai posted this image on social media following the incident

A disqualified driver who tried to run away from gardai after he was observed driving erratically is facing prosecution for several road traffic offences.

Highlighting the incident on social media, gardai say a red-coloured Nissan Tiida was first spotted near Rathnew, County Wicklow on Wednesday afternoon.

Because of the concerns about the nature of the driving, gardai moved to stop the car.

However, in the post on X and Facebook, they allege the driver failed to stop and pull in when he was approached and prompted to do so. "After some dangerous manoeuvres he eventually stopped the car only to take off on foot to try evade us," they stated.

"We're faster though and when we caught up, we discovered the car was uninsured and he was a disqualified driver," added a spokesperson.

According to gardai, a roadside drug test which was performed after the driver was apprehended, was positive for both cocaine and cannabis.

While gardai have not confirmed any further details, it's understood the car was seized and that a criminal prosecution has been initiated.
