ALERT: Storm Kathleen with Status Orange warning issued

Storm Kathleen has hit Ireland, bringing difficult travel conditions due to fallen trees and coastal flooding as thousands of homes are without power.

A Status Orange weather warning is in effect for five counties with a countrywide wind warning in effect throughout today.

A number of households are currently without power in the southwest of the country, with Cork and Kerry in particular experiencing outages.

Over 1,000 houses in Limerick are without power on Saturday morning.

The country’s crisis management team yesterday warned the public that Storm Kathleen is a “dynamic” storm and to “stay away from all coastal areas for the duration of the Met Éireann warnings”.

Gardaí have warned people to be careful due to a risk of fallen trees and loose debris.

"If you live by the coast, please be mindful of wave overtopping and coastal flooding when outdoors," a garda spokesperson said.

Early on Saturday morning Met Éireann warned that Storm Kathleen will bring very strong and gusty southerly winds to all areas today, with severe and damaging gusts in the south and west.

Counties Cork, Kerry and Waterford are currently under a Status Orange wind warning due to gale force southerly winds, with some severe and damaging gusts.

This warning came into effect at 7am and remains in place until 2pm, while a Status Orange wind warning for Galway and Mayo will come into force between 9am and 6pm today.

The entire country is under a Status Yellow wind warning from 5am until 8pm this evening with strong, gusty southerly winds sweeping across the country.

Dublin Airport is open and operational today. Despite strong winds, the airport has reported that the early wave of departures and arrivals has moved well.

"As always, passengers flying today are advised to check with their airline directly for updates regarding specific flights," a spokesperson said.
