Waterford councillor left ‘absolutely astonished’ by location of speed van

A local councillor has been left “absolutely astonished” by the location of a speed van in a town in County Waterford.
Fine Gael councillor Damien Geoghegan made the remarks at the June meeting of the Dungarvan-Lismore Municipal District.
Cllr Geoghegan said: “What role do we have as a council in relation to the location of speed vans?
“I know we obviously have a role in the setting of speed limits and that but I’m absolutely astonished, I have to say, over the last couple of months to see a speed van parked in the Causeway area [of Dungarvan].”
He went on to say that whilst speeding is a major issue nationwide, he doesn’t think it has been an issue at that particular location.
“Of all the places in our electoral area, if any of us could pick an area we would put a speed van, that would be the last place you’d put it and yet there’s one there.
“I’m not so sure that there was ever really an issue there regarding speeding. I’m all for dealing with it.
“Speeding is a major issue on our roads but to have a speed van parked in the Causeway, I’d like an explanation, basically, for it.
“Whoever is going to give me that explanation, I don’t know.”
In response to Cllr Geoghan, Maria Goff, Senior Executive Engineer at Waterford City and County Council, said that the location of speed vans is an enforcement matter.
She added that such enforcement matters are a matter for An Garda Síochána.
