A popular Waterford car dealership has been granted permission to construct a new showroom building in the city.

Alan Galibert Car Sales had submitted a planning application for its site at an address of Six Cross Road, Kilbarry, Waterford.

The development will see the construction of a two-storey car showroom building with a display area on the ground floor and office suites on the mezzanine first floor.

There are also plans for an adjoining single storey valeting workshop, car wash bay and car sales forecourt.

Customer car parking and two EV charging stations complete plans for Block A of the development.

Meanwhile, Block B and C will consist of two two-storey semi-detached retail units. Each of these will have associated shop signage and customer car parking.

It is envisaged that the existing site entrance will remain as is, with no modifications to be made.

Alan Galibert Car Sales is currently located at Halfway Point, Coolgower, Tramore Road, Waterford.

It began as a strictly online sole trader business in 2008. However, director Alan Galibert has since developed it into a company that now employs eight staff.

A document attached to the planning application detailed how the business has faced “extremely challenging times” of late.

This has been “not just owing to the last economic downturn, or Covid-19, but also due to the repeated struggle to find a permanent premises to trade from”.

On a number of occasions, Waterford City and County Council has provided a premises for the business, which the business described as “very helpful”.

However, these premises have always been subject to a limited time for lease.

Alan Galibert Car Sales was located on Fountain Street, Ferrybank from 2019 to 2022, before relocating to the TOP Petrol Station on the nearby Dock Road.

After a brief stint at the former art college on Newgate Street in the city, the business moved to its current location.

However, the council informed Alan Galibert last year that the business was required to once again vacate its premises.

It is envisaged that the new development will allow the business to expand further, with plans to increase the workforce of the dealership.

The application was submitted under the name ‘Just Wheels Limited’ on June 22, 2025.

Waterford City and County Council granted permission for the development on March 2, with 15 conditions attached.
