Many Waterford drivers are unaware of speed limits inside housing estates, a council meeting has heard.
The issue was raised by Sinn Féin councillor Pat Fitzgerald at the September plenary meeting of Waterford City and County Council.
Cllr Fitzgerald said there is an “extensive road network that’s inside private housing estates” and this can cause confusion over speed limits.
He commented: “While we have 30km/h signs at the entrance to the estates, some of these estates are quite big and that sign may be 500 metres from an area where there is some speeding.”

Cllr Fitzgerald asked the council executive whether more speed limit signs could be put inside housing estates.
“I was at a lot of residents’ meetings during the summer months and I find a lot of residents are unaware of the speed limit inside the estates,” he concluded.
In response to Cllr Fitzgerald, Senior Engineer Gabriel Hynes said that the council will look at putting additional signs in place in housing estates where speeding is an issue.
