Motorists warned busy Waterford road will remain shut for another two weeks due to works

Abbey Road is to remain closed until August 30

A busy road near Waterford Train Station is to remain closed for another two weeks, due to major development works.

Abbey Road, which has been shut since June 28, was due to re-open over the weekend but the local authority has confirmed the closure is to be extended until Friday, August 30.

In a public notice, which was shared on social media, Waterford City and County Council says local access will be provided for schools which are due to re-open before the closure is lifted.

The closure is in place to facilitate "deep excavation works" associated with t he North Quays Public Infrastructure works, which include enhanced multi-modal access routes, a public transport hub including the relocation of Waterford Train Station to the North Quays, a sustainable transport bridge, and extensive flood defence system.

The sustainable transport bridge will link the relocated train station to new walking and cycling infrastructure.

It's hoped this will reduce the reliance on private car and facilitate alternative modes of transport for those accessing the city centre.

Funding for the works comes from a public investment of €207 million including €100.6 million of Urban Regeneration and Development funding.

Traffic impacted by the closure is being diverted to the N29/Port Road.
