The number of gardaí stationed in Waterford city has fallen continuously since reaching a record high during the Covid-19 pandemic.
In December 2021, there were a total of 246 gardaí stationed in the city. Five years on, that figure now stands at 194.
Of these, 159 are on general duty, 25 are sergeants and eight are inspectors. There is also one superintendent and one chief superintendent.
Despite the decrease in the city, there have been increases in garda numbers elsewhere in the metropolitan area.
The December 2025 figures show that there are now 10 gardaí stationed in Ferrybank, compared to the two that were there in 2021.

There are now 44 and 9 gardaí stationed in those two locations respectively.
In the west, 53 gardaí were stationed in Dungarvan in 2021, but that figure now stands at 44.
Lismore and Tallow have maintained their tallies of two gardaí, whilst Cappoquin has seen its total go from two to one.
An Rinn, Ardmore, Ballymacarbary and Aglish have all maintained their total of one singular garda.
