An “iconic” Waterford landmark is in a “very sorry state”, a Waterford City and County Council meeting has heard.
Metropolitan Mayor, Cllr Adam Wyse, raised the issue of the Clock Tower in Waterford city during the November meeting of the Metropolitan District.
Cllr Wyse said: “I know there is ongoing work on the patio there by the Clock Tower but the Clock Tower is in a very sorry state.
“The actual time isn't working, it’s covered in moss and there’s brown dirt all over it.
“I don’t think it’s acceptable just because there’s work going on on the North Quays that we would leave the Clock Tower, an iconic part of Waterford, left in a sorry state now.”

Cllr Wyse concluded by saying he would like to see the Clock Tower improved.
In response, Director of Services Michael Quinn said that Waterford City and County Council are aware of the issues.
Mr Quinn said: “There has been difficulty getting access because some of the structure inside has collapsed. So it is something we are trying to sort out.
“It will probably happen immediately after BAM are finished on the South Quays and they hand that over to us because we don’t want to be interfering on their site, but it is on the jobs to do.”
“It will look appropriate in the new setting,” Mr Quinn added.
In its latest update, Waterford City and County Council described work on the South Quays as “well-advanced”.
The area is expected to provide a landscaped public realm area with seating, lighting, a green area and bicycle facilities.
A glass flood defence barrier is currently being installed along the river, and the plaza works are expected to be complete in January 2026.
At that point, final snagging checks and safety audits will be completed in advance of any opening to the public.
Public access from the South Plaza to the sustainable transport bridge will be closed off and
secured until the bridge opens to the public.
