McDonalds in Waterford has paid a special tribute to two employees - Kevin Brophy and Andrew Gallagher - living with Down Syndrome who have both worked a total of 55 years at two restaurants between them.

Supervisor Siobhan Sanderson has worked for the company for the last three decades herself and currently splits her time between the restaurant chain’s two Waterford eateries.
She said Kevin Brophy (49) and Andrew Gallagher (43), who each work five to six hours a week in different restaurants, are great team players and fun to be around.

Siobhan interviewed Kevin herself when he was looking for work at Cork Road all those years ago.

“He started out in the kitchen, then moved to front of house, which worked out really well,” she said.

“Kevin works in the dining area, interacting with customers, making sure the tables are clean and checking the toilets.

“He’s been doing that job for the last 30 years and we recently had a party, with cake, on June 12 to celebrate his anniversary with us.

“His family came to the restaurant, so it was a very special occasion and Kevin loved every minute of it.”

Siobhan explained how Kevin’s bosses marked the day by taking him for lunch and subsequently promoting him to a customer care position, while providing him with a new uniform for his new role.

“We thought it would be a nice surprise for him - and it was,” she said.

“We asked him if he’d do us the honour of taking on the customer care role because we always get so much positive feedback about him from everyone who meets him in the restaurant.

“Kevin said yes and reminded his family that he told them he’d be a manager one day.”

Andrew works in the dining area and makes sure everywhere is kept clean in the city centre restaurant.

“He takes great pride in his work and he's been with the company for 25 years,” said Siobhan, who added his colleagues love having him around.

“It educates staff on how people with Down Syndrome bring extra happiness to the workplace,” she said.

“Andrew and Kevin always come to work with a smile on their faces.

“They tell it as it is. They bring diversity and a different dynamic to the restaurant.”

Siobhan described Kevin as “a bit of a joker” whom everyone adores because “he brings so much joy” with him.

“He's funny, he's witty, he loves his birthday - literally after Christmas he starts talking about his birthday.”

Siobhan said McDonald’s feels very strongly about giving everyone a chance in the workplace.

“People from every walk of life, every individual brings something different to the workplace,” she said.

“Kevin and Andrew have a great relationship with all their colleagues,” she said.

“They really enjoy working alongside the rest of the staff and their energy makes the McDonald’s experience more special for all of us.”

Franchisee Joe Byrne, who owns and runs both Waterford restaurants, said they feel lucky to have Kevin and Andrew on the team.

“They’ve been part of the McDonald’s family in Waterford for five and a half decades which is incredible,” he said.

“We are so thankful to have them working alongside us and we really appreciate their dedication and enthusiasm.

“Hopefully they’ll stay with us for another couple of decades at least.”
