A local senator has asked Taoiseach Micheál Martin for some ‘loose change’ to fix a road in Waterford.

Independent Waterford Senator Joe Conway addressed the Taoiseach during Mr Martin’s recent appearance in the Seanad.

“There has been a lot of talk about world issues but my issues are strictly parochial,” Senator Conway began.

He went on to address the situation with Waterford Airport’s private investment and in particular, the nearby R708 road.

“As the Taoiseach knows, Waterford Airport is being progressed using private funding. This is a good news story for the south east.

“I do not want to pre-empt the discussions of my former colleagues in Waterford City and Council, but it is not all good tidings and hoorays because the airport development will necessitate realignment of the R708.”

Senator Conway asked the Taoiseach about the possibility of having the road funded by the Government.

“That is going to cost the council €800,000. I wonder if, through his good offices, the Taoiseach could find €400,000 of loose change in the Department of Transport.”

Mr Martin appeared to see the funny side of the request, replying by exclaiming “how much?”.

“We need €400,000. Go raibh míle maith agat. Job done, I would say,” Senator Conway replied.

When Mr Martin had given his reply to all of the senators' various queries, Senator Conway protested that Waterford Airport hadn’t been mentioned.

The Taoiseach replied: “When in trouble, we say, ‘That is under regular review.’ There is a new private sector owner coming in. The Minister will assess that.”

Mr Martin added that the Government will “certainly have a look” at funding the realignment of the R708.

The Taoiseach was appearing before the Seanad to give his annual address, with this year marking the 100th anniversary of the house.

Senator Conway was one of 33 first-time senators present for their first Taoiseach’s address.
