UPMC Whitfield Hospital in Waterford has launched its new Medical Admissions Unit today.

It has been opened in an attempt to provide quicker access to hospital care for patients that have been referred by their GP.

The service will be led by a team of consultants and will provide care to patients who have non life-threatening conditions.

It will serve people living in Waterford, Wexford, and South Tipperary.

“This new Medical Admissions Unit ensures patients can access timely, expert care without the delays often associated with traditional hospital admissions. By streamlining the referral process and providing direct access to diagnostics and specialist oversight, we are improving both the patient journey and GP collaboration," Gwen Daniels, General Manager at UPMC Whitfield Hospital, said.

The Medical Admissions Unit is designed to deliver consultant-led assessment and oversight, faster diagnosis and treatment, rapid access to bloods, X-ray, CT, and MRI, and streamlined admission where hospitalisation is needed.

“Our goal is to reduce waiting times and improve the overall patient experience, while ensuring urgent medical issues are treated quickly and appropriately. We’re delighted to offer this new access point for care to people across the South East,” Gwen added.

Emergencies should continue to be directed to the nearest Emergency Department.
