Waterford City and County Council will join local authorities across Ireland on Friday, June 27 to mark 'Your Council Day.'

This is a national campaign promoting the vital work of city and county councils as well as the people behind the services that support communities every day.

Coordinated by the Local Government Management Agency and supported by all 31 local authorities, 'Your Council Day' is an opportunity to showcase the wide range of services councils provide - from community spaces and planning to local democracy and economic development.

This year’s theme, which is building stronger communities, highlights how local authorities foster environments where people feel connected, supported and empowered to thrive.

The public is encouraged to follow the day’s events on Waterford City and County Council’s social media platforms and join the conversation using the hashtags #YourCouncilDay and #DoLáSaChomhairle.

Sean McKeown, Chief Executive of Waterford City and County Council, said, "'Your Council Day' is a valuable opportunity to highlight the wide range of services provided by Waterford City and County Council and to recognise the vital role we play in supporting everyday life across Waterford.

“As a Council we deliver over 1,000 essential services that touch every aspect of daily life and that contribute to ‘building stronger communities.’

“These services include street cleaning, maintenance of upwards of 3,000 km of roads, provision of social housing to upwards of 9,500 families and individuals, processing of around 1,000 planning applications each year, maintenance of parks and open spaces and over 50 playgrounds around the County, operation of fire services, management of library services, tourism promotion, enterprise supports for small businesses and support for over 70 community festivals held throughout the year — these are just a small snapshot of the wide-ranging work carried out by our Council every day.

“Your Council Day is a chance to shine a light on the contributions, celebrate the impact, and raise awareness of the essential role your Council plays in building stronger communities," he concluded.

Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr Jason Murphy added, “Your Council Day is a powerful reminder of the essential role our council plays in the everyday lives of our residents.

“From maintaining parks and libraries to supporting local businesses and community groups, our work touches every corner of life in Waterford. This day is about celebrating the people behind those services and promoting the connection between the council and the communities we proudly serve.”
