A new documentary telling the story of Waterford’s rising star in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is set for a private hometown screening this weekend.
Freya – Beyond The Mat will be shown on Sunday, May 11, in Waterford, chronicling the remarkable journey of 11-year-old Freya Marsh as she competes at the highest levels of her sport around the globe.
“Hailing from Waterford, Freya brings heart, humility, and an unstoppable work ethic to everything she does, whether training at home, competing abroad, or balancing the demands of youth with the intensity of elite-level sport,” a press release on the documentary states.
Directed by Arthur Lopes and produced by Alberto Rocha, the 80-minute documentary follows Freya through a transformative year, capturing her victories, challenges and the unwavering support of her family, coaches and local community.
From early mornings in Waterford to podium finishes in the USA, Portugal, Brazil and the UAE, the film gives an inside look at the life of one of the world’s top-ranked young Jiu-Jitsu athletes.
Freya, who trains with Checkmat Waterford and is supported by Raise The Bar strength and conditioning coach Darragh Mulcahy, is a two-time European Champion and gold medalist at the Abu Dhabi Worlds and London Open.
She’s currently ranked number one yellow belt female in her weight class and number three overall in the world by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation.
Speaking ahead of the screening, Freya said: “My ambition has always been to pursue my sport and discipline and to think this has been captured for a big screen showcase is really quite incredible.”
The film will now be submitted to international festivals following its Waterford debut.
