President Higgins welcomes Waterford Civil Defence members to Áras for 75th anniversary

Two Waterford Civil Defence volunteers were among those present at Áras an Uachtaráin this week as part of national celebrations marking the organisation’s 75th anniversary.

Commanders Jason Conway and Thomas Durney represented Waterford at the special reception hosted by President Michael D. Higgins and his wife Sabina on Wednesday afternoon.

The event welcomed volunteers and officers from Civil Defence units across the country in recognition of their contribution to emergency response, community support, and public safety.

The anniversary celebration was a chance to acknowledge their commitment and dedication, with President Higgins addressing volunteers gathered from all 26 counties.

Among those in attendance was Waterford Minister of State John Cummins.

Following The event, Minister Cummins said: “It was an honour to represent the Government today at an event in Áras Uachtaráin, which marked 75 years of Civil Defence in Ireland.

“Members of the Civil Defence are the unsung heroes of our communities, ordinary individuals who take on extraordinary responsibilities.

“Their work stands as a powerful testament to the spirit of service and selflessness.

“Whether supporting emergency services or coordinating rescue efforts during times of crisis, Civil Defence members play a vital role in ensuring public safety and resilience.

“What makes their contribution especially profound is the fact that many serve not for recognition or reward, but out of a genuine desire to help others and skilfully step into danger when others are seeking safety.

“I was delighted to meet with members from across the country and to thank them and their families for their work, dedication, and compassion.”
