Waterford Garda to feature in new RTÉ series Cailíní Comhraic on women in combat sports

Cailíní Comhraic, a new three-part Irish language series that follows four Irish women, including a Waterford-based Garda, breaking boundaries in combat sports is set debut on TV tonight.

The series explores the highs and lows of women at all ages and abilities as they push themselves to their limits in their individual sports. From seasoned athletes to rising stars, Cailíní Comhraic captures the journeys of these remarkable women as they shatter stereotypes, show incredible grit, and make their mark in the competitive world of combat sports.

The series follows an inspiring group of women in Irish combat sports, including Dungarvan-based Christina Desmond.

Christina, a Cork native and seasoned member of the Irish Olympic boxing team, is on a mission to secure her place on the national team for the 2024 Olympics. Christina balances this commitment with having a full-time career with an Garda Síochána, Dungarvan.

Mary O’Neill, a third-dan sensei from Donegal is embarking on an exciting new chapter. She has opened her own martial arts club, which is the first female-run club in Donegal. The series explores the challenges and triumphs of Mary’s first year in business.

Rising star Rosa Walsh, also from Cork, is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitor at the top of her game, competing in GI and NO-GI. Rosa takes us to the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu European trials in Croatia as she fights for a chance to win her first world title.

Julie Ní Dhubháin and Sienna Ní Shúilleabháin are a dynamic mother-daughter duo from Connemara, Galway. Julie is the only female coach at Club Dornálaíochta Chonamara, and trains her daughter Sienna, who is chasing her dream of winning her first All-Ireland boxing title.

In episode one, boxer Christina sets her sights on competing at the 2024 Olympics. Rosa trains relentlessly as she prepares for the European BJJ Trials and in the world of karate, while Mary attends her first karate competition of the year, ready to prove herself on the mat. We also meet Julie and her daughter Sienna. Julie is the only female coach at Club Dornálaíochta Chonamara and discusses coaching her daughter Sienna, who has her sights set on winning her first All-Ireland title.

The first episode of Cailíní Comhraic will air tonight, Monday, March 24, at 8pm on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player.
