Gardai in Waterford city are appealing for information after a large number of cars in the same estate were broken into and property taken from them on the same night.

"This type of offence is on the increase so we would ask people to be vigilant when locking their cars and securing the keys," said crime prevention officer Sergeant Deirdre O'Neill.

"In one case a vehicle was stolen when the culprits entered a house and stole the keys of the vehicle" said Sgt O'Neill who confirmed that the suspects have since been arrested and charged. The stolen car has also been recovered and returned to its owners."

"The advice is to check and recheck that the vehicle is locked, consider parking in a well lit area. If you have a video doorbell position the car to allow full use of the recording device and if need be adjust the angle of the camera to take in the area the vehicle is parked, having full regard to GDPR regulations," advised Sgt O'Neill.
