OPW approves over €80,000 for Waterford coastal study

Over €80,000 has been approved by the Office of Public Works (OPW) for a coastal study in Waterford.

The study - covering 25km of coastal grounds including the shoreline of Back Strand, the area behind Tramore Beach and the rock cliffs to Brownstown Head - will take approximately 9 months to complete.

The areas of greatest concern reportedly extend from Kilfarrassy in the west to the Back Strand area adjacent to Tramore.

Waterford Senator John Cummins commented on news of the €81,724 in funding and said, "This is a matter which I have been progressing over several months with my good friend and colleague Minister of State with responsibility for Office of Public Works Patrick O’Donovan and I was delighted to learn this morning that the funding has been awarded to the Tramore project.

"The results of the study will be complied into a plan which will outline the appropriate measures to be put in place around how to mitigate coastal erosion and to protect our beautiful coastline for future generations.”

Senator Cummins concluded by saying: "I am particularly happy that there will be a significant element of public consultation and engagement carried out as part of the study and I encourage all stakeholders to engage with this process."

The study will be led by Waterford City and County Council alongside appropriate experts.
