Orthopaedic consultant at Waterford's UPMC Whitfield Patrick Carton has been awarded a prestigious Honorary Fellowship by the World Society of Sport and Exercise Medicine.

Mr Carton received the award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to sports medicine and, in particular, the area of surgical management. He has been a full-time consultant at UPMC Whitfield since 2008, and is an internationally renowned specialist in hip and knee replacement surgery.

He has also worked internationally, training surgeons in hip resurfacing and keyhole surgery, and pioneered a technique known as labral cuff refixation, which involves removing harmful bone spurs from around the hip joint to prevent arthritis.

“This recognition of Patrick Carton’s significant contribution to sport and exercise medicine is thoroughly deserved. Patrick has been providing outstanding care to patients in need of hip or knee surgery nationwide for over 10 years, as well as leading the way in cutting-edge surgical research," chief executive officer at UPMC Whitfield David Beirne says.
