'Creative Identities Masterclass' series kicks off in Waterford today
A new Creative Identities Masterclass Series launches today, November 7, in Waterford.
The purpose of the series is to help people explore new ideas about the role creativity plays in meeting urban challenges and how a sense of cultural identity manifests itself in an urban centre.
The event takes place at the WIT Department of Architecture, The Granary, O'Connell Street, Waterford.
Creative Identities Masterclass Series events begin on Wednesday, 7 November and continue on Thursday, 22 November with the second event taking place at the WIT College Street Campus.
The series, which supports the development of Waterford Cultural Quarter and the Design Challenge project was developed by the Creativity and Culture Research Group, (CCRG), at Waterford Institute of Technology, (WIT).
This is in partnership with Waterford Local Enterprise Office and Garter Lane Arts Centre. It is supported by project partners Waterford City and County Council, Fáilte Ireland, the Institute of Designers in Ireland, (IDI), the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland (DCCoI), Institute of Creative Advertising and Design, (ICAD), and Creative Ireland.
“The Masterclass consists of two parts. The first part includes an introduction to the series and a presentation from an invited speaker. The speaker is an expert in their field of creative practice or research. The second part provides an opportunity for face-to-face dialogue between the invited speaker and WIT BA (Hons) Design students, together with invited early career local design and business community representatives,” explains Dr. Fiona Dowling, WIT.
The first masterclass coincides with an EU Creative Spirits Network delegation visit. Delegates will be attending the Masterclass on the 7th. WIT students from the BA (Hons) Design (Visual Communications) programme will have an opportunity to present samples of their work in progress on related Waterford Cultural Quarter projects to delegates from the visiting EU network at a showcase event later that afternoon, hosted by Waterford City and County Council and Garter Lane Arts Centre.
Jacqui Gaule, Senior Enterprise Development Officer, LEO “We are delighted to be a sponsor of this initiative as enterprise education is a vital part of our business. The aim of the local enterprise office is not only to assist existing entrepreneurs to reach their potential but to educate the entrepreneurs of the future. Design plays a leading role in this as the market is constantly changing and skills such as creativity and innovation are required to help the entrepreneur to look at what they do and how they are doing it enabling them to adapt and change when necessary.”
