The communities of Cashel, Nenagh and Lismore are in mourning following the death of Br Patrick Ildephonsus Ryan (Mason).

Br Patrick, who was 95 , had been a teacher all his life and had retired to Nenagh in 1999. He once served as principal in Lismore CBS in Waterford. He was due to celebrate his birthday 96th on December 22.

He taught Irish, Religion, History and Latin.

Originally from Gooldscross, Cashel, Br Patrick began his teaching career in Crumlin CBS Primary School in 1942 before becoming principal in Gorey CBS in 1964, where he spent 18 years.

This was followed by a further 18 years as the principal in CBS Lismore.

Br John Dooley of Nenagh Christian Brothers house, described Br Patrick as the "sharpest brain in the house."

He was excellent at quizzes and crosswords, said Br Dooley.

"He was an active retiree. He helped in the garden and also helped out in Nenagh daycare centre where he ran the Bingo sessions up to about three years ago," he said.

Br Patrick had also driven back and forth to visit his family in Gould's Cross until a couple of years ago.

"He was very close to his family," said Br Dooley.

He said that the brother's community had celebrated Br Patrick's life at what he said was a "very special celebration" in the monastery in Nenagh this Monday.

Br Patrick died this Monday, September 3, peacefully.

Br Patrick, Nenagh, and late of Ballyroe, Gooldscross, Cashel, Gorey and Lismore, was predeceased by his sisters, Minnie Duane, Sarah Mescall, Nora McGrath, Maggie Ryan and Nellie Comley, and brothers, John and Jimmy Ryan. Sadly missed by the Brothers of his Community, his nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
