WIT's link with Germany was strengthened recently with the visit of German Ambassador Deike Potzel to the college.

German has been taught for many years in WIT on Business, Tourism and Arts programmes and students also have the option of studying in Germany at one of WIT’s partner universities.

Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) was delighted to welcome the German Ambassador to Ireland, Her Excellency, Deike Potzel to the Institute on August 8.

WIT has very strong links with Germany, including students studying on undergraduate courses, student and staff exchange and shorter study programme visits.

Ambassador Potzel met with Head of the School of Humanities Dr Suzanne Denieffe, Vice President for Strategy Dr Richard Hayes, and Head of the Department of Languages, Tourism and Hospitality Ray Cullen.

The ambassador also met with Cordula Weiss, a German native working at WIT’s STEM outreach hub Calmast.

Speaking about the strong connection, Dr Suzanne Denieffe said, “WIT is delighted to have a wide range of academic and research links between Ireland and Germany.”

She said that German has been taught for many years in WIT, being included in Business, Tourism and Arts programmes and that, "students also have the option of spending one or two semesters studying in Germany at one of WIT’s partner universities as part of their undergraduate programme funded by the European Union Erasmus programme."

Each year WIT welcomes up to 50 German students to study on a variety of undergraduate programmes in the areas of Business, Engineering and Humanities.

WIT has active staff exchange programmes with over 20 German Universities and the Institute actively engages in shorter visit to Germany. For example, next February a group of over 20 students from the Bachelor of Arts programme will participate in a one week study programme in Germany.
