RIP:  'A truly gentle soul'- Funeral to be held for Waterford priest cherished by many

Tributes have poured in following the sad passing of Father David Keating from Waterford City.

Father David from Claremont, Cork Road, Waterford died on 7th February 2026, late of Three Gables, Dunmore Road, Waterford.

Fr. David was College Chaplain of SETU Waterford.

He will be sadly missed by his loving mother Monica, brother John, sisters Janet, Deirdre and Susan, brothers-in-law Declan and Richard, sister-in-law Jennifer, nephews and nieces Darragh, Saoirse, Cillian, Eanna, Natalie, Andrew, Charlotte, Sarah, Samuel, Sophie, Neil and Alec, extended family, relatives, Bishop Cullinan and the priests of the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore, his colleagues, staff and students of SETU Waterford, neighbours and friends.

FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS:

Reposing at Thompson's Funeral Home, Barrack St, Waterford on Friday (13th February) from 7:00pm to 8:30pm with vigil prayers and Rosary at 8:00pm.

Requiem Mass on arrival in St. Mary’s Church, Ballygunner on Saturday (14th February) at 1:00pm followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Heartfelt messages have been left on RIP.ie, from those who knew and fondly remembered Fr. David, with one mourner writing,

"So very sad to hear of David’s passing. Sincere condolences to his mother & all his family. David was a gentle kind & a very compassionate man to all of us who needed it at difficult times in our lives. Always a pleasure to meet around SETU & outside. Thank you David. Rest in peace".

Another message said, "So very sorry to hear of Fr. David's passing. He was a generous, caring, brave and thoughtful person, the like of which we seldom meet in life. Such a wonderful colleague to staff and Chaplain to our students in WIT (setu). The college is so much poorer for his loss. My sincerest heartfelt condolences to his family at this very sad time. Rest in peace, David".

"I am deeply saddened by the loss of Fr. David, a truly gentle soul. His kindness and warmth touched everyone around him, and his presence will be dearly missed in SETU. David was always there for everyone in the college offering support and kindness with a genuine heart," another mourner said.
