A new TG4 documentary series is set to shine a spotlight on some of Ireland's most historic surnames, including one with strong Waterford roots.

Sloinne, which begins on Sunday, May 11 at 8.30pm, will delve into the fascinating origins and legacies of names such as Mac Gearailt/FitzGerald, Ó Briain/O'Brien, Ó Néill/O'Neill, Ó Loingsigh/Lynch and Ó Gallachóir/Gallagher.

But for Waterford viewers, it's the episode focusing on de Paor, or Power in English, that is expected to draw particular interest.

The Power surname has deep ties to the southeast, and in this episode, Siobhán de Paor sets out to trace her family history.

Along the way, she meets pianist Hugh Tinney, son of renowned Irish academic Dr Sheila Power, who was famously offered a fellowship by J. Robert Oppenheimer in 1948.

Produced in a travelogue style, Sloinne visits castles, family homesteads and landmarks tied to each name, uncovering the personal and historical stories that shaped Ireland.

The episode exploring the de Paor surname will highlight its strong connection to Waterford and its lasting influence on Irish cultural and academic life.

The show airs weekly on TG4, and the de Paor episode is the fourth in the series.
