Employees at the Waterford facility of Garrett Advancing Motion will be facing "real distress and uncertainty" following the announcement that 36 people will be made redundant in the New Year.

The news comes just a few months after 12 workers took voluntary redundancy following a downturn in business.

There are currently 112 people working on the factory floor and many of them have worked there for decades, according to The Munster Express.

At a recent staff meeting, management told employees that they could not guarantee the facility would still be operating come the end of 2026.

Garrett Advancing Motion is a multi-national company that makes turbo-chargers and hybrid technologies.

Globally, it has a team of roughly 9,000 people and in 2024 its revenue was €3.5 billion.

Following the announcement of redundancies, two Sinn Féín TDs in Waterford released a joint statement.

"We are deeply concerned by reports of a significant number of voluntary redundancies being sought at Garrett Advancing Motion in Waterford. This news will cause real distress and uncertainty for workers and their families, particularly in the run-up to Christmas," Deputies David Cullinane and Conor McGuinness said.

The company responded to say that they "continuously evaluate the market" and adapt their strategy but that redundancies are necessary.

"We are dedicated to supporting those affected and will comply with all local regulations throughout this process," the company added.
