Gardaí and Revenue raid on Waterford home nets over €135,000 in cash and tobacco seizure

Revenue officers in Waterford uncovered more than €135,000 in cash and tobacco during a search of a local property.

The operation, which took place on Friday, September 5, was carried out by Revenue officers in Waterford with support from colleagues in Kilkenny and Rosslare, and was assisted by An Garda Síochána.

During the raid, officers seized €109,000 in cash along with almost 30kg of Amber Leaf tobacco, with an estimated retail value of €26,216. The haul represents a potential loss to the Exchequer of nearly €20,000.

A woman was questioned following the seizure, and Revenue confirmed that investigations are continuing.

On Saturday, Judge Geraldine Carthy granted detention orders at Kilkenny District Court in respect of the cash seized.

Revenue said the bust forms part of their ongoing efforts to clamp down on smuggling and the shadow economy.

"These routine operations are part of Revenue's ongoing work targeting smuggling and shadow economy activity," they said.
