A local animal organisation has expressed its frustration after a German Shepard dog was put to sleep due to what they described as 'wilful neglect'.
It is believed the female dog recently had pups and the public was urged to be on the look out for them. The dog was rescued from Tesco in Waterford and treated at Suirside Veterinary Centre, but they were unable to save her.
Dungarvan Animal Matters and Welfare Information hit out at the situation.
"To be still fighting against this s**t for over 35 years is not acceptable," they said on social media.
They urged the authorities to take action. Extra funding for more inspectors was also urged.
"The country needs a dedicated welfare inspectorate system, one which is not affiliated to any particular charity/organisation rather one that will work with local animal welfare organisations/groups and which is directly funded by the government/department of agriculture," the group said.
Waterford Animal Welfare said every effort was made to save the dog.
