AS IT STANDS: Sitting TD to lose seat as Waterford General Election picture takes shape

The General Election picture is becoming clearer in Waterford after all boxes in the four-seat constituency were tallied on Saturday morning.

Sinn Féin's David Cullinane will comfortably top the poll again when official counts come through. He pulled in 22.4% of first preference votes, according to the tallies.

He'll be followed up the road to Dublin by Fine Gael's John Cummins who will regain his seat on 19.3%, while Fianna Fail's Mary Butler will also be returned having polled 18.7% of votes.

The battle is on for the fourth seat and it's between Independent Matt Shanahan and Sinn Féin's second candidate Conor McGuinness. McGuinness will be helped by the election of party colleague Cullinane but Shanahan is very transfer friendly.

As it stands, McGuinness looks to have taken the lead with 10.8% of the vote while Shanahan will be chasing having collected 9.9%. That match up is too close to call.

One thing that is certain is that the Green Party collapse was as evident in Waterford as elsewhere in the country. Sitting TD Marc Ó'Cathasaigh has seen the vote that saw him elected in 2020 virtually halved as he attracted just 3.1% of first preference votes this time around.

Mary Roche of the Social Democrats picked up significant votes with 5% but is too far behind to mount a challenge for the fourth and final seat.
