The Portlaw GAA clubhouse
Portlaw GAA Club in County Waterford has received a big boost after it received planning permission for the construction of a stand.
The proposed development includes the demolition of an existing dugout, the provision of a covered bicycle stand and the construction of a 200 all-seater stand.
The fully seated spectator stand is designed to “integrate sensitively” with its surroundings. It measures approximately 4.5 metres in height and 28 metres in length.
The open-sided form, sloped cantilever roof and proposed landscaping aim ensure the structure remains visually unobtrusive within the site.
The stand will be fully covered and used during daylight hours only. As a result, no artificial lighting is proposed.

A ramp will provide wheelchair access to the stand, ensuring inclusive access for all users. The proposal also includes a sheltered bicycle stand, with a maximum height of 2.1m.
In its planning application, Portlaw GAA Club acknowledged the progress it has made on its facilities in recent years.
A club spokesperson said: “Over recent years, the club has worked diligently to provide national-standard facilities aimed at enhancing the well-being and quality of life for residents in Portlaw and surrounding areas.
“These include an all-weather ball alley, modern dressing rooms, a community gym, meeting rooms, a community walking track, as well as a host of community-focused initiatives.”
They continued by outlining the benefits of the proposed development and by highlighting the care with which the stand was designed.
“This structure will offer comfort and shelter to both visitors and local spectators, ensuring they can enjoy the wide range of sports and activities hosted at our facility.
“The fully seated stand has been carefully designed to blend seamlessly into its surroundings.
“Flanked by evergreen hedging on either side and backed by the existing industrial unit, its open-sided design and sloped cantilever roof ensure that it does not present a sesne of bulk or mass.
“Instead, it retains a light, unobtrusive, and almost ethereal quality in keeping with the character of the site.”
The club spokesperson concluded by outlining the club’s continued commitment to community development.
Waterford City and County Council received just one submission in relation to the proposed development.
That submission was made by independent councillor Declan Clune, who voiced his support for the proposal.
The council granted permission for the development on February 13, with four conditions attached.
