Camogie: Inside the Championship goes behind the scenes of Waterford's championship campaign

Waterford's Camogie stars take centre stage in new behind-the-scenes RTÉ documentary

Waterford's camogie heroes are set to star in a brand-new RTÉ documentary that promises to show the sport like never before.

Camogie: Inside the Championship airs this Thursday, November 6, at 10.15pm on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player, offering viewers unprecedented access to the highs, heartbreak and hard graft of this year's All-Ireland Championship.

Waterford is one of just five counties featured in the two-part series, alongside Dublin, Galway, Kilkenny and Tipperary, as cameras capture every twist of a thrilling championship season - from pre-season grind to championship fever pitch.

The cameras follow the Déise right through their campaign, which saw them bow out at the semi-final stage after a ten-point defeat to eventual runners-up Cork. Waterford had earlier dispatched rivals Clare by the same margin in the quarter-final, while Cork went on to lose the All-Ireland final by a single point to Galway, who denied them a three-in-a-row on a 1-14 to 1-13 scoreline.

From team talks and training ground struggles to the soaring emotions of match days, the series takes viewers inside dressing rooms, sideline huddles, and tactical meetings, revealing the passion, pressure, and pride that drive the players in blue and white.

Producer Carol Hanlon said: "From upsets on and off the pitch, this series delivers a gripping insight into the reality of playing camogie at county level. Given the thousands of kids and adults playing camogie weekly, our hope is that these two episodes give the sport the visibility it deserves."

Director Ross Whitaker said it was "a huge privilege" to document the championship: "We wanted to take a sport that doesn't get the credit it deserves and tell the stories of the amazing people and athletes behind it. Our biggest difficulty was fitting it into just two episodes".

The documentary also shines a light on life away from the pitch, showing players balancing work, study, and family with the demands of elite competition.

RTÉ's Paula Fahy said the series "captures the intensity, skill and commitment of the players, showcasing the women driving camogie forward and bringing viewers closer than ever to the game".

Episode one of Camogie: Inside the Championship airs this Thursday night at 10.15pm on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player, with the second instalment following next week.
