The Waterford Fire Service has returned to the scene of the fire this morning

The fire in the Comeragh Mountains in County Waterford is “likely to continue burning over the weekend”, the local authority has said.

The Waterford Fire Service has returned to the scene of the fire this morning after operations were stood down overnight.

Waterford City and County Council issued an update on their efforts in a post on social media this morning.

In a statement, a council spokesperson said: “The hillside fire in the Comeragh Mountains remains active this morning.

“The situation was monitored overnight, and fire crews are again on scene today.

“The fire is burning across difficult and, in places, inaccessible terrain, some distance on foot from the nearest access points.”

They went on to say that the fire is likely to continue burning and its movements are being monitored.

“The fire is likely to continue burning over the weekend. There is currently no risk to homes or other buildings.

“Weather conditions, including wind direction, are being closely monitored, as they may affect the movement of smoke in the surrounding area.”

The spokesperson concluded by asking members of the public to avoid the Kilcloone and Coumshingaun area.

People are particularly advised not to undertake the Coumshingaun Loop Walk while operations continue.
