Waterford Council nominates former Lord Mayor of Cork as Presidential Candidate
Waterford City and County Council has nominated former Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Kieran McCarthy as the Presidential Candidate from Waterford.
11 candidates made presentations to the Council during a Presidential Election Special Meeting last Friday, September 19th.
Cllr. McCarthy was proposed as the Presidential Candidate by Cllr. Joe O'Riordan and was seconded by Cllr. Joe Kelly.
He received 11 votes for and 10 against while five people abstained from the vote.
15 candidates originally sought nomination at the Special Meeting. They were Dolores Cahill, Peter Casey, Nick Delehanty, Gearoid Duffy, Dr Donncha MacGabhann, Cllr Kieran McCarthy, Lorna McCormack, Keith McGrory, Catherine Morrissey Smyth, Sarah Louise Mulligan, Joseph Obi, Lucy Anne O'Leary, David Parnell, Dr Cora Stack, and Gerben Uunk.
To run for the presidency, candidates must receive the backing of at least four local councils, 20 members of the Oireachtas, or if they are a former or retiring President.
Councils across the country have until Wednesday to make a nomination.

Already in the race is Catherine Connolly, who is backed by Sinn Féin, Labour, the Social Democrats, People Before Profit, and the Greens.
Jim Gavin is the Fianna Fáil candidate while Heather Humphries has been backed by Fine Gael.
The Presidential Election will take place on October 24th.
