Clean Air Together announces Waterford as next venue for citizen science project

400 citizen scientists are set to take part in the initiative which has garnered huge success in other counties

Clear Air Together has announced that Waterford will be its next location for the citizen science project.

The decision to select the Deise county comes after the success of the initiative in Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick.

The project is led by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which will partner Waterford City and County Council. They will be supported by Kilkenny County Council and the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce.

Over the coming weeks and months, the project will be aiming to recruit 400 participants to measure the levels of the air pollutant nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at locations across Waterford City and its environs.

A spokesperson for Clean Air Together says the project has four clear objectives.

The organisation hopes to increase public knowledge and awareness, help people better understand and take action to improve air quality in their local area.

The final two objectives revolve around using the data to help inform EPA air quality modelling along with working collaboratively with stakeholders in support of relevant national policy.

Most recently, the citizen science project was carried out in Limerick during October 2024 with the results announced in March 2025. The findings were that Nitrogen Oxide levels in Limerick were generally low.

EPA director Dr. Micheál Lehane says the project in Limerick was a big success. "Clean Air Together Limerick City is a great success story with over 400 citizen scientists in the city measuring the levels of traffic pollution in their local areas. The campaign has provided an incredibly useful snapshot of nitrogen dioxide levels in Limerick and has given us important data about this air pollutant."

Clean Air Together will be looking to replicate Limerick's success when it begins it new venture in Waterford over the coming weeks. The project is set to launch in Waterford on Monday, August 15 but Clean Air Together is already accepting expressions of interest from potential participants - click here for more information.
