A popular café in Waterford city has closed its doors for the final time, much to the dismay of its loyal customers.

The Granary Café on Hanover Street announced its permanent closure in a social media post on January 9.

It read: “Today we say goodbye. The Granary Café has officially closed its doors. What started as a café became a community, and we are forever thankful for the love and support you showed us.

“Thank you for choosing us, supporting local, and making the Granary Café a special place. This isn’t easy, but the memories will always remain.”

The post received hundreds of reactions and comments, with many customers expressing their sadness at the news.

One user commented: “Our favourite place to eat healthy, nutritious and delicious food in Waterford with lovely staff that cared so much for all the customers.

“Some of the people working there were there since the start and must have liked working there. I hope you all find careers that deserve your obvious dedication, hard work and friendliness, best wishes.”

Another comment stated: “Shocked and saddened to hear this - huge loss to the city!

“Great memories of coffee and chats at the Granary down through the years. All the best to everyone.”

Meanwhile, one user stated: “Such sad news. What a lovely place in Waterford. And the lads are always so nice and helpful. Wishing you all the best for the future.”

At present, the café has not stated any reason for its closure. However, rising energy costs and council rates have long been cited as the main reason for closures elsewhere in the city.
