Waterford talent to shine with 11 students and apprentices in national finals

Eleven students and apprentices from across Waterford are set to represent the county on the national stage later this month at WorldSkills Ireland 2025.

The event, which takes place at the RDS Simmonscourt from September 17-19 will see more than 180 finalists from around the country go head-to-head across 35 skill areas, ranging from construction and hospitality to creative arts, ICT and engineering.

Over 30,000 senior cycle students are expected to attend the showcase, billed as Ireland's biggest celebration of skills and apprenticeships.

Among those carrying the Waterford flag are:

  • Mary Barron (Welding)
  • Rachel Horsom (Electrical Installation)
  • Ryan Kielty, Adam Long, Michael O'Regan and Jason Murphy (Digital Construction – BIM)
  • Noah Quilty (Cooking)
  • Aaron Scanlan (Metal Fabrication)
  • Alex Whelan (Welding)
  • Tadgh Whitmore (Painting and Decorating)
  • Kristers Zakis (Industrial Insulation)

Commenting on this year's finalists, Ray English, Chair of WorldSkills Ireland, said: "WorldSkills Ireland is a celebration of talent and a vital platform for promoting apprenticeship and skills-based career opportunities. This year, students and apprentices from across the country will compete in 35 different skill areas, each working to exacting standards and under time pressure.

"It's an incredible opportunity to showcase their abilities and, for some, take the next step towards representing Ireland on the world stage."

The event runs alongside the Irish Times Higher Options expo, giving students a chance to explore both academic and skills-based pathways in one visit. As well as the live competitions, visitors can experience interactive 'Try a Skill' zones, VR demonstrations, and talks from industry leaders, with major employers on hand to meet students.

WorldSkills Ireland 2025 is supported by leading industry partners including SISK, Construction Industry Federation and ESB Networks, along with government and Apprenticeship Ireland.

The finals will take place on Friday, September 19, when Ireland's top young tradespeople and apprentices will be crowned.
