Watch the ceremony live on YouTube this evening
Legendary singer-songwriter Gilbert O'Sullivan will be awarded the Freedom of Waterford this evening at a private ceremony in Waterford's City Hall.
Speaking to RTÉ's Morning Ireland, the Waterford native said it's a "lovely honour", and that "It's special because I'm a local boy".
The 77-year-old who grew up on the Cork Road in Waterford, but spent most of his childhood in the UK when his family relocated, will be surrounded by close friends and family this evening when he receives the award.
"It's nice to have all my family here, not my mother", he added, "I think if my mum was here it would have been fantastic for her, but spiritually she'll be here.
"It's wonderful to have everybody together, even if it's a brief meeting. And they're very proud of me which is kind of nice too."
O'Sullivan will play two concerts in Dublin's National Concert Hall and Cork's Opera House this September, and hinted that an extra Waterford show is being "lined up".
"We haven't come back here in quite a long time, so there are plans for us to come back here, that's being put together", he added, "And I think that's important that that does happen now."
This evening's ceremony is private, but will be livestreamed at 6.30pm on Waterford City and County Council’s Official YouTube Channel, click the link below to watch.
