There is “considerable worry” among old-age pensioners in Waterford amid issues with the Revenue Commissioners, a council meeting has heard.

The topic was discussed by independent councillor Donal Barry at the November plenary meeting of Waterford City and County Council.

Cllr Barry brought forward a notice of motion calling for the reopening of Revenue’s public offices at the Glen in Waterford city.

He said that the office closed to the public during the Covid-19 pandemic and never reopened thereafter.

Cllr Barry continued: “The service currently available to the people of Waterford is not suitable for many, particularly our elderly population.

“There are often long delays on phone lines and the alternative is not practical for those with limited computer skills.

“If a person from Waterford wishes to deal with Revenue issues in person, they now must make an appointment and travel to Dublin or Cork. This is completely unacceptable.”

Cllr Barry said that in recent weeks, approximately 77,000 letters have been issued by Revenue to old age pensioners around the country regarding the property tax.

He said this caused “considerable worry and stress for many of them”.

Cllr Barry concluded by saying: “I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect vulnerable people to travel long distances for essential tax or pension matters.

“I think Revenue should urgently restore in-person services in Waterford to ensure fair and accessible support for all citizens.”

The motion was seconded by fellow independent councillor Joe O’Riordan. When put to a vote, it was unanimously agreed to by all the elected members present.

Waterford City and County Council will now call on the Secretary General of the Revenue Commissioners, Niall Cody, to reopen the public office in the city.
