Outdoor amenities across Waterford are set for a major boost after €408,469 in funding was confirmed for ten local projects this week.

The money comes through the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS), which is delivering €8.7 million for 221 projects nationwide. In Waterford, applications were submitted by Waterford City and County Council and Waterford Leader Partnership CLG in collaboration with community groups and trail organisations.

Among the successful projects are upgrades at Ardmore Pier and Boat Cove to improve sea swimming access (€40,000), new trail works at Lacey's Wood in Dunmore East (€39,510), and improvements to the Passage East–Crooke walking loop (€40,000). The Waterford Greenway will also benefit, with €40,000 allocated to repair and upgrade the Crooked Bridge Play and Amenity Area.

Other projects include a €50,000 accessibility and safety audit of beaches, harbours and slipways, €39,848 for new multi-access features on the Anne Valley Walk, and €39,998 to reroute part of St Declan's Way through St Declan's Well. Planning and assessment works at the Glentanagree Bridge "Barracks" Trailhead and Recreation Site will receive €44,737.

Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr. Seamus Ryan welcomed the announcement, saying, "It is wonderful news to see the recent funding announcement under ORIS 2024/2025. Over the past decade in particular Waterford has witnessed the development and upgrade of numerous wonderful outdoor recreation experiences which we can be truly proud of.

“Not only do these amenities enhance Waterford's reputation as an outdoor destination for visitors to the area but they also help ensure the health and well-being of the local population and help build resilience in our communities.

"I would like to warmly congratulate staff at Waterford City and County Council and Waterford Leader Partnership CLG involved in the submission of these applications, as well as sincerely thanking the community groups who were highly involved in the application process."

Stakeholders are currently preparing the first ever Waterford Outdoor Recreation Plan, due to launch in late 2025, which these new projects are expected to support.
