CONCERNS have been raised about the safety of a product that has gained popularity as a sensory toy, particularly among children.

Water beads, also known as gel beads or sensory beads, are small pellets made of a super-absorbent polymer that can expand significantly when soaked in water. While they have become a trendy plaything, the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) is sounding the alarm about the potential dangers these seemingly harmless beads pose to young children, particularly babies and toddlers.

The key risk associated with water beads lies in their small size and absorbent nature. When swallowed by a child, water beads can expand further in the digestive tract, potentially causing intestinal blockages that require immediate medical attention.

Additionally, incidents have been reported worldwide where these beads have become lodged in the ears or noses of children, leading to serious complications like hearing loss and discomfort.

To mitigate these risks, the CCPC is offering a series of guidelines for parents and caregivers to follow:

  • Keep water beads away from young children: Given their small size and appealing appearance, water beads can easily attract the attention of curious toddlers and babies who might put them in their mouths.
  • Supervise older children: While older children may be able to enjoy water beads under supervision, they should only be allowed to play with the beads after they have fully expanded to their intended size.
  • Thoroughly clean up after use: After playtime, ensure that all water beads are accounted for and properly cleared away. This includes checking under furniture or other objects where beads may have rolled.
  • Dispose of water beads safely: Once their playtime utility has diminished, it is important to safely dispose of water beads to prevent them from becoming a hazard.
  • Separate age-appropriate toys: Keeping toys designed for different age groups separate can help prevent younger children from gaining access to items that may pose a choking or ingestion hazard.
  • Check recommended age ranges: Always adhere to the recommended age ranges indicated on toy packaging. Most water beads are designed for children aged 5 and older.

The CCPC emphasises that if there is suspicion of a child ingesting or inhaling a water bead, or if one becomes lodged in their nose or ear, immediate medical assistance should be sought. Quick intervention can prevent potentially severe complications from arising.
