Man arrested after woman dies following assault

A man has been arrested after woman died following an assault in Waterford city.

Emergency services attended an incident at a home in Grange Heights at about 6.15pm on Monday.

A woman aged in her 40s was taken to University Hospital Waterford where she was later pronounced dead.

A man aged in his 40s was arrested at the scene and was in custody at a Garda station in the Waterford Division under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Gardai said they were investigating a fatal assault and the State Pathologist has been notified.

A post-mortem examination is due to take place and the scene has been preserved for a technical examination.

A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been established at Waterford Garda Station.

A family liaison officer has been assigned to support the family of the deceased.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to come forward or those who may have relevant video footage.
